How we build each calculator
- 1. Source selection. We start with the most authoritative primary source for the domain (e.g., EPA eGRID for US grid emissions, NREL PVWatts for solar).
- 2. Formula transcription. We transcribe the equation exactly as published, with unit checks in both metric and imperial systems.
- 3. Sensitivity testing. We compare outputs to reference examples in the source document — carbon calculators against EPA's household example, AQI against EPA breakpoint tables, etc.
- 4. Uncertainty labeling. Where the source publishes uncertainty (e.g., IPCC GWP ranges), we surface it in the result panel.
- 5. Peer review. Complex tools are reviewed by a domain specialist before publication.
- 6. Version tracking. Every update is stamped so users can see what factor version powered their calculation.
