Upfront vs use-phase
Building a 60 kWh EV battery emits ~6 tonnes CO₂e. But an EV driven on the average US grid emits 100–120 g/km vs 220–260 g/km for a comparable gasoline car.
The crossover
In the US, EVs break even with gas cars around 20,000–25,000 km. In coal-heavy grids (India, Poland) it can take 60,000 km. In hydro/wind-heavy grids (Norway, Quebec) it's under 15,000 km.
Frequently asked questions
- Are EVs really better if I have a dirty grid?
- Almost always yes over the vehicle's lifetime, but the benefit is smaller. Charge on off-peak / solar hours to improve further.
