The short definition
A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases — expressed as kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (kg CO₂e) — that a person, product, company, or country puts into the atmosphere over a given period, usually a year. It bundles CO₂ with other warming gases (methane, nitrous oxide, refrigerants) into a single, comparable number.
The concept was popularised in the mid-2000s to give individuals and organisations a way to see their contribution to climate change in a single figure. Today it underpins climate reporting standards from the GHG Protocol, IPCC guidelines, and national inventories.
What makes up your personal footprint
For most people in high-income countries, four categories dominate:
1. Transport (25–35%) — cars, flights, buses, trains. A single long-haul return flight can emit 1.6–4.0 tonnes CO₂e — often more than a year of daily driving.
2. Home energy (20–30%) — electricity, natural gas, heating oil. A gas furnace typically emits 2–4 tonnes/year; a heat pump on a clean grid can cut that by 60–80%.
3. Food (15–25%) — production, processing, transport. Beef and lamb are the heaviest hitters (roughly 50–100 kg CO₂e per kg meat); plant proteins are 5–20× lower.
4. Goods and services (15–25%) — clothing, electronics, healthcare, entertainment. Fast-fashion clothing alone can add 300–500 kg/year.
How it's measured
Every activity is multiplied by an emissions factor — a number that says 'this activity emits X kg CO₂e per unit'. Emissions factors come from national inventories (EPA, DEFRA), IPCC, and peer-reviewed life-cycle studies.

Global and national context
The world emits about 53 Gt CO₂e/year (IPCC AR6). Divided across 8 billion people, that's ~6.6 tonnes per capita — but the average masks huge inequality: a US resident averages ~16 tonnes, an EU resident ~7, an Indian resident ~2.
To keep warming under 1.5°C, per-capita emissions need to fall to roughly 2 tonnes/year by 2030 and near-zero by 2050. Almost every high-income lifestyle currently exceeds that budget several times over — which is why measurement plus targeted action matters.

What doesn't move the needle much
Actions like unplugging chargers, reusable straws, or paperless billing feel virtuous but each saves under 20 kg/year. They matter as habits but shouldn't crowd out the high-impact list above.
