Wind Turbine Power 101: Why Bigger Really Is Better

Wind power scales with the cube of speed and the square of blade length. A quick primer on why modern turbines are 200 m tall.

The power equation

P = ½ × ρ × A × v³ × Cp. Air density ρ ≈ 1.225 kg/m³, A is swept area (π r²), v is wind speed, Cp is the power coefficient (Betz limit: 0.593; real turbines: 0.35–0.48).

Why doubling matters so much

Double the blade length → 4× the power. Double the wind speed → 8× the power. That's why turbines are getting taller — winds are stronger and steadier at 150 m+.
